Youth and Government

YMCA of Paterson

What

Youth and Government is a nation-wide program run by the YMCA to develop the future politicians, lawyers, and leaders right here in our neighborhoods. Students write and debate bills, take on roles like senators or lobbyists, and work alongside peers to make meaningful contributions to their communities.

By becoming active participants in the legislative process, our youth gain a deeper understanding of how government works while developing essential skills in public speaking, negotiation, and teamwork

Who

This program is divided into two groups – Junior and Senior delegations. Junior delegates are students in grades 6th through 8th who are introduced and taught the basics of the NJ State government and focus primarily on the bill creation process. Senior delegates compose of high school students who have the opportunity to simulate all civic processes found in our government including judicial, press, lobbying, legislative roles.

Why

Paterson, the state of New Jersey, and nation at-large are in desperate need of leaders right now. We understand that not every student wants to be a lawyer when they grow up, but every student should be able to communicate effectively, be confident in their abilities and beliefs, and advocate for themselves in any environment. The Youth and Government program educates our children to know the law as well as get to know themselves and develop character. We believe all students involved in this program, especially if they start early, will grow up to make their parents and their community proud of who they’ve become.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the program?
The program officially ends after the state-wide conference concludes on April 27th. However, training for Youth and Government and another similar program called “Model United Nations” restarts in the fall.

How much does it cost to participate?
For the 2025 conference we’re excited to announce we’re able to provide scholarships to those in need of financial aid, meaning the classes, the pre-legislative conference in March, and the final conference in April are all completely free of charge! Otherwise, the fee for the final conference is $503 which covers the cost of the student’s food and hotel room.

I think this is great, but I don’t have any children of age. How can I help?
We are actively looking for donors and mentors to help grow Youth and Government to be as great as it can be and serve as many people as possible. If interested, call us and leave a message: (973) 321-3330.
